Stamp Collecting Makes Great Hobby

Stamp collecting is an enjoyable hobby for young and old. Collecting engages your passion and is limited only by your imagination and vision.

My neighbor collects stamps of vintage cars. They bring back memories of vehicles he has owned and the travels he took in them, but they also allow him to dream about models he could never afford but would have loved to drive. Some might think his stamp collection is a poor substitute for owning the shiny, chrome-studded real thing, but not my neighbor. He can own a whole fleet of circa 1950 Chevies without the expense of maintenance, insurance or gas!

How do you start collecting? Be selective, advises Dick Sine, author of Stamp Collecting for Dummies. "Pick something you like and collect around it." For example, you can build a stamp collection around a favorite sport, places you have visited, a period of history, or, like my neighbor, an object of your desire. Sine recommends collecting for fun, not profit. Set an amount you can afford to spend on your hobby every month and build your collection slowly over time.
