Zimbabwe Commemorates Distinctive Native Rondavels

From the mists of Victoria Falls, nestled between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers in southern Africa lies Zimbabwe. Settled by the Bantu 2,000 years ago, it became the center of a vast Shona expire that stretched from the Kalahari Desert to the Indian Ocean. At its apex between the 11th and 15th centuries, the Munhumutapa Empire traded in gold, ivory and copper with the Arabs.
The Shona lived in round huts built of clay (daga) with thatched roofs. Villages were surrounded by thick grass or stick fences to protect from predators. The distinctive rondavels are still favored by natives and dot the modern countryside. County Stamp Center offers a number of uniquely illustrated stamps honoring the country of Zimbabwe. You can select from national heroes to picturesque train bridges to the charming native huts shown. (Click the post title to order.)
