Beatles Mania! Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!

I remember when the Beatles made their first trip to America in 1964. My cousin was just coming into her teens and was besotted with the mop-haired British rock band. The night they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, our families crowded into the living room to gather around our 19-inch black and white console TV. Even my folks wanted to know what all the hullabaloo was about. I don't know that our parents were terribly impressed, but my cousins and I were captivated by the look and sound of music so excitingly new.

Leading the British Invasion, the Beatles took America by storm, leaving screaming, swooning fans in their wake and inspiring thousands of garage bands. John, Paul, George and Ringo redefined popular music with innovative sounds and the use of unconventional instruments from the early 1960s until their breakup in 1970.
